Story
Just hours after humans are born, the gods take what little power we have. In return, they protect our borders from the vicious, merciless fae. The humans who manage to keep their power are known as the corrupt. And they are burned. When my forbidden power is discovered, I’m forced to flee my tiny village and the life I adore. To survive, I make a desperate bargain with the mercenary who abandoned me at my weakest moment. Our deal is simple: I’ll help him and his mysterious friends sneak into the city, and he’ll help me learn to wield the strange, dark power I’ve always kept hidden.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Publisher's Summary
NO GOD
NO CREATURE
NO WAR
CAN COME BETWEEN THEM
The epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak from number one SUNDAY TIMES bestseller Rebecca Ross
Eighteen-year-old Iris dreams that one day her writing will make a difference. A war between gods is raging, and she’s landed a prestigious job at the Oath Gazette.
But at home, she’s barely holding it together. Her brother is missing on the frontline. Her mother is lost in a haze of addiction. And each night Iris pours her heart out in letters to her brother.
Letters that will never be answered. Or so she thinks…
They’ve made their way into the hands of the last person Iris trusts: Roman Kitt. Her cold, unforgiving rival at the paper.
Drawn together by fate and magic, they form an unlikely connection. They say love conquers all… but can it triumph in a war between gods?
Critic Reviews
“Rich and romantic – if stories had scent, this one would smell like a mug of black tea, the ink ribbons of a typewriter, and that addictive spice called enemies to lovers." (Shelby Mahurin, New York Times bestselling author of Serpent & Dove)
"A sweeping start to a beautiful and romantic new series. Ross weaves her stories in such a vulnerable and delicate way, truly with a style all her own. I adored this book." (Adalyn Grace, New York Times bestselling author of Belladonna)

So very Sweet
Absolutely adored divine rivals. It was something so heartwarming and sweet about the story arc. I loved the subtle magic system. I absolutely adored the realm and presence of the gods, and the interesting way in which the gods have been woven into this more time aged period.
This is such a sweet story. It was wholesome, honest, and yet still full of yearning.
It had young and an chanted Lake House vibes.

Well worth the listen
I loved every second of this. The writing is good, the worldbuilding and plot even better, and the narrators are brilliant. The voices are both perfect for the characters and it is a captivating listen.

Scratched an Itch
This was an amazing book, a historical fantasy that was set in a WWI inspired period (instead of the traditional Medieval-esque setting) in a magical realm, with gods, monsters and enchanted type writers. The romance is the most satisfying academic rivals to lovers and a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

I did really enjoy this
The story was a slower pace and didn’t blow me right out of the water straight away, but as it went along I did find it really well written and the characters and world was believable and engaging. Defiantly recommend a listen. Narrators were excelllent but if I’m going to nitpick…the male narration sounded a bit young for me. I know he’s meant to be 19 but he sounded 16! That’s just me being picky though. I would recommend!
