Story
A man is shot dead, and his body is dumped on the moors. His arm is stamped with the Chinese symbol for 'sorry'. There have been five unsolved murders with the same hallmark. The police can’t find any motive or connection between the victims. Bella Richards was close to the murdered man. She lives with her five-year-old son and has begun a new life in the local area. Publisher's Summary
Forty years ago something terrible happened in Annie's new house....
Annie Naden and her husband buy a remote country cottage at auction. It’s the home of their own that they always wanted, but as they begin renovations, Annie discovers a satchel in a dusty old hidden cupboard. Inside are the usual schoolbooks, now over 40 years old, and a girl’s diary. Among the record of day-to-day crushes and pop concerts is a secret whose terrible consequences are still resonating to this day.
Detective Tom Calladine has problems of his own. A notorious villain, Vinny Costello, seems to be back in town, and the bodies soon stack up. With Calladine’s loyal DS Ruth Bayliss on maternity leave, he gets in hot water with one of Costello’s assistants and must also cope with an abrasive new member of the team as they seek to untangle a complex series of murders.
What happened to that girl 40 years ago? And what’s it got to do with the current crime wave?

Revenge after 40 years
A nasty villain who seems to be beyond the long arm of the law and young, foolish youths who believe they are invincible. What can possibly go wrong?
There is a long buried secret in Leesdon that has started to impact on the lives of the current residents of the area. The discovery of an old school satchel in a long abandoned house helps to bring two investigations together.
Calladine seems to be up to his bad habits where attractive women are concerned and his DS Ruth Bayliss is still trying to reform him.
There is conflict within the team when DCI King is sent to work with Calladine’s crew. She is holding back information about why she is with them. This leads them to leave her out of the loop if they can and to go around her to follow up on information.
There are no secrets that can’t be uncovered if you dig deep enough.

Comfortingly northern (England)
I love the straight talking, say it how it is, that comes through as the hallmark of northern English everyday speacj. No messing with subtle humour undertones. This is a good story that emerges from the past into the lives of the team. It's been a while since I listened to the first set in the Calladine & Bayliss series but I'm straight back where it left off. Great.
