Publisher's Summary

Every witch knows the rules: Stick to your own kind. Never reveal your powers to outsiders. Take a consort from the witching families or kiss your magic good-bye forever.

For years I've been quiet, obedient Rose Hallowell. I accepted the man my stepmother chose for me. But I never stopped missing my long-ago friends.

Now we're back on my childhood estate to arrange my marriage. The boys I grew up with? They're still in town - and they haven't forgotten me either. And damn if they haven't grown up well.

They've got no magic, no place in my life. But they're charming and sweet and infuriatingly hot, and I can't seem to stay away. The more I try to resist, the more secrets I uncover about my family, my betrothal, and everything I thought was true about the witching world.

I've been lied to. I've been betrayed. So to claim my magic and my happiness, I'll break every rule there is - and then some.

Don't mess with this witch. Every rose has thorns.

Contains mature themes.

Like the story.

Like the story but the narration lets it down.
Male characters should be Male narration & Female characters should be Female narration.

Lite and easy

It's candy floss, so as you'd expect there's some weakness in the plot.
The female narrator is excellent.
The male narrator is weak.
Good fun listening.

Consort

I’m only about a quarter of the way through the story writing this but I am loving the story line that unfolding. The narrators are doing a great job with distinguishing between the different characters. But I have to give the performance a lower star rating because I can not hear the males voice well. His narration is quite muffled and hard to hear. Turning it up load enough to hear him then results in her voice being too loud when it comes on, so I am constantly turning the volume up and down.

Finally listened to this

This has been in my profile for over a year. The prompt for book club made me listen to one that’s been there the longest. It’s good, I don’t really understand the imaginary friend or what exactly she is yet. But decent start. 3 star listen.

Mills and Boon with a bit of low end magic thrown in

Stated with some potential but soon became pretty poor erotic fiction. I wouldn’t recommend it.

So weird. And not in the good way.

Firstly, the female protagonist is 21 with an imaginary best friend. That should pretty much be everything you need to form an opinion. But I’ll expand further.

Whilst the concept was mildly interesting, the whole thing just felt like a poorly produced YA Netflix special.

The writing wasn’t horrible. But the 2-dimensional characters and rushed plot line really prevented me from connecting.

What really struck me as an odd and disorienting choice was the use of a male and female narrator. I have experienced this in the past where it was more successful as the male took on the male roles and visa versa. But in this instance the bulk of the narration was performed by the female narrator, speaking as both male and female voices, with the male narrator only reading the 5 (or so) chapters written from male character point of view. The primary issues with this were:

1. The production quality for the female narrator was excellent, clean and crisp. Whilst the production quality for the male was significantly and noticeably lower.

2. Both narrators narrated both the male and female voices. But the narrators had different accents, rhythms of speech and intonation. Meaning that Seth, for example, sounded completely different depending on who was reading him.

3. The male narrator sounds like Donald Trump, complete with odd pauses and inflections.

Unless you are very bored, I’d suggest you don’t waste your time.
