Story
After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Story
Before the being called the Emperor revealed himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence. Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites. Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts - and people - of the galactic past. Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future.

Publisher's Summary
Now that news of Horus' treachery is in the open, a time of testing has come. Some Legions have already declared their allegiance to the Warmaster while the loyalty of others lies firmly with the Emperor. As Horus deploys his forces, loyalist Astartes learn that a massive Wordbearers fleet is heading to Ultramar, home of the Ultramarines.
Unless they can intercept the fleet and destroy the mighty battleship that has been sent to reinforce it, the Ultramarines may suffer a blow from which they will never recover.

it was kinda boring tbh. there were just no good characters. it's not like previous books in the series that had at least 1 or 2 interesting characters.

Engaging from start to finish
Every character felt unique and each their own real individual, gripping tightly as each intense moment could have been anyone's last.
The reading was outstanding, bringing each character to life, not one moment did I think the tone was off.

The analogies don't stop
If you're looking for a book to skip, I think this is one. I don't think enough time is spent building any connection with characters, I often didn't realize it had even switched to a different character. I thought it may have been me and my lack of attention span, but listening to the next book "Mechanicum", I am engrossed in it and loving it.
Oh and every second or third sentence is an analogy in this book, using unnecessarily big words. I think it really pulls you out of the story.
in the end, I don't even know what the payoff was.
